Part 1

The King’s Three Questions

The story starts with the thought of a king. According to him, he would never fail in his life if he knew the answers to these three questions.
The three questions are:

• What is the right time to begin something? 
• Which people should he listen to?
• What is the most important thing for him to do?

Different Answers from the People

To get the answers to these three questions, the king sent his messengers throughout the kingdom and promised a large sum of money who would answer these questions. 

After this, a lot of people came to the king, but they all answered these questions differently.

Here are some of the answers that people had given for the first question:

• The king must prepare a timetable and have to follow it strictly 
• It is impossible to decide something in advance 
• The king needs a council of wise men who will help act for him at the right time 
• The king has to go to the magicians because magicians can only look into the future and will tell him the right time to do something.

Here are some of the answers that people had given for the second question:

• Councillors
• Priests
• Doctors
• Soldiers 

And, here are some of the answers that people have given for the third question:

• Science
• Fighting
• Religious Worship

The King’s Decision to Visit the Hermit

The king was not satisfied with these questions, and he didn’t give any reward. Instead, he thought of seeking advice from a certain hermit (a person who lives alone and leads a simple life) who is known for his wisdom.

The hermit always lives in a wood (here, wood refers to a small forest) and just sees normal people; that’s why the king also puts on simple clothes. Before reaching the hermit’s hut, he sent his horse back with his bodyguard. 

Meeting the Hermit

The king saw that the hermit was old and weak and was digging the ground in front of his hut. He greeted the king and continued with his digging. Then, the king went to the hermit and asked him three questions. But the hermit didn’t reply to his questions. The king asked the hermit to dig on behalf of him.

The hermit agreed and sat on the ground. After digging two beds, the king again repeated his questions. The hermit didn’t reply, he stood up and asked the king to rest and give him the spade, but the king continued to dig. Hours after hours passed, and the sun went down behind the trees. The king said that if you did not answer my questions, then I will return back home.

Part 2

An Unexpected Visitor: The Wounded Man

The hermit pointed towards a man from behind; the king turned and saw a bearded man. The man was wounded, and he fainted and fell to the ground. The king covered the man’s stomach with a handkerchief and re-dressed him until the bleeding stopped.

After feeling a little bit better, the wounded man asked the king for something to drink. The king brought fresh water for the man; now the sun was set, and the king and the hermit took the wounded man into the hut and laid him on the bed. The king also laid down on the floor and slept after a very tiring day. 

A Change of Heart

After waking up, the wounded man asked the king to forgive him and told the whole story behind the wound. The wounded man said that he wanted to take revenge on the king because he killed his brother and also seized his property.

The man knew that the king had come to the hermit to get his answers. He made up his mind to kill the king on his way home. But as the day passed, the king did not return, so the wounded man left his hiding place, and he met with the king’s bodyguard, who recognised and attacked him.

Somehow, he escaped from the bodyguard and met with the king. Now, he told the king that he would be his most faithful servant and would also command his sons to do so. 

The king was delighted that he quickly transformed his enemy into a friend; he forgave him and said that he would send his own servants and doctors to look after the wounded man. He also promised to give his property back.

The Hermit’s Answer to the Three Questions

Now leaving the wounded man there, the king started looking for the hermit and asked him the last time to answer his questions. The hermit said that the questions of the king had already been answered; the king asked how.

The hermit explains that if the king had not helped him dig the beds, he must have left for his home, and the man would have attacked him. At that time, the hermit was the most important man, and doing good for the hermit was the most important business.

Afterwards, when the wounded man ran to the hermit and king, the most important time was when the king was caring for him, but without dressing, he would have died without making peace. So, he was the most important man, and all the things the king did for him were his most important business.

At last, the hermit said that

• the most important time is “Now” because it is the only time when we can act. 
• The most important person is the person we are at the particular moment because the future is unpredictable, and no one knows whom we will meet in the future.  
• The most important business is to do good for the person because it is the main reason we are sent into this world. 

And, here, the story ends.
